more information about Agarwood

What is agarwood? How does agarwood form?

Agarwood is not the wood itself. Agarwood is the sap and resin that is produced by the tree for healing.  An agarwood tree that has been damaged, (maybe hurt by human beings, maybe subjected to insect or ant manifestation, or by fire, flood and/or wind) creates the sap and resin to heal and protect itself. The tree needs at least 20 years to fully form its healing properties.

How does agarwood work so well?

Research demonstrates that agarwood oozes a fragrance which can help soothe the nervous system, regulate hormonal imbalance, revitalise memory and elevate mood. In fact, agarwood fragrance is produced from the many molecules that the tree produces to heal itself. So far, scientists have discovered about 300 types of molecules in agarwood all of which contribute to the very complicated and unique charm of the fragrance. In fact, scientists have not been able to replicate the molecular structure in the laboratory.

Incense burning is an ancient lifestyle.

Incense burning has been enjoyed in China as early as 5000 years ago. And became prominent in the Song Dynasty around 1500 years ago where there was a culture of burning incense throughout the royal palaces and households. From the royal palaces, incense burning in China was used during festivals and processions to honour ancestors and household gods.  In Japan, incense was incorporated into the Shintō ritual, and some samurais used it to perfume his helmet and armour to achieve an aura of invincibility (as well as to make a noble gesture to whoever might take his head in battle). In Greece as early as the 8th century BCE, woods and resins were burned as an offering to gods and for protection against demons. Ancient Egyptians used incense to cover smells from mummy’s and to protect them from evil spirits. Now,  what was once only available to royalty and spiritual leaders, is available to all.

Enjoy no smoke incense.

Fire insulation incense burning is a no smoke alternative which makes the most out of agarwood in terms of its characteristic scent. To burn the incense you lay incense powder upon burning charcoal which smulders away upon a protective, silverlined,  mica sheet.  Or, place small pieces of agarwood on top of the charcoal. The charcoal sends out heat slowly, so that the scent of agarwood rises gradually. As the temperature increases or decreases, the scent of the agarwood will keep on changing. This method can be more pleasurable and fun.
